What Is The Difference Between Flush Casement Windows And Non-Flush Windows?

Unless you are an expert in all things windows, you might be a little confused about the difference between two of our most popular window styles, flush casement and non-flush windows.

As the names suggest, the key difference is whether the design is ‘flush’ or not.
On a ‘flush’ casement window, the sashes sit level with the window frame, creating the flush appearance that many homeowners love.

However, on our standard non-flush casement windows, the sashes sit above the frame.

If you are looking to replace your windows, we suggest you visit Speedy’s showroom in Horsham to inspect the two window types up close, so you can decide which you prefer.

What is the history of flush and non-flush casement windows?

Non-flush casements have been around in the UK since the 18th century and they remain Britain’s number one window style. Back then, the windows were made out of iron by blacksmiths, until timber got popular. Now, non-flush casements tend to be made from UPVC and aluminium.

Flush casements haven’t been around for quite as long, but they can still be dated to over 200 years ago in the 19th century. At this time in history, all windows were made from timber.

This explains why a high majority of properties built in the late Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian eras have timber flush windows.

Why have so many modern homeowners fallen in love with flush windows?

Many home improvement companies, like us, recommend flush windows to homeowners looking for something less bulky and a little bit different.

Made from UPVC, our Envisage flush windows are a contemporary recreation of traditional timber flush windows. They accurately mimic the simplicity and minimalistic clean lines of the traditional flush windows, however being made from UPVC makes them much more durable and low-maintenance.

Out of the two styles, which will complement my home?

As UPVC flush windows do a great job at preserving the style of the original timber flush windows, they are often chosen for historic properties and homes based in conservation areas.

However, our Envisage flush windows also complement contemporary houses, especially if you choose a modern colour like Anthracite Grey or Black.

Our casement windows suit a whole host of property types, from new builds to period cottages, so we are certain they will complement your home, whatever its style.
