Heritage Windows – What Are They?

Heritage Windows – What Are They?

Some window styles fall into the category of being heritage windows, a name that suggests they are reminiscent of windows from times gone by, but there’s a little more to them than that.

They’re designed and crafted to mimic classic window offerings to the very finest details, stylistically, so that they perfectly complement the original architecture of buildings.

Heritage windows are a popular choice of replacement window for homes that are listed or located in a conservation area, especially late 19th and early 20th century properties.

Planners are particular about what window systems can be integrated into these types of homes and heritage windows tend to appease them because of their authentic looks.

Traditional designs with modern qualities

It’s hard to replicate traditional timber windows as they have such a unique charm and appearance, but the heritage window is a fine contemporary interpretation of them, with a matching allure.

Their wood effect finish is incredibly realistic and because they’re manufactured using either UPVC or aluminium, it makes them highly energy efficient, secure and draught proof, so much more so than genuine timber windows.

A wooden window will also only usually be single glazed, but heritage windows come with double or triple glazed units.

Two main heritage window styles

There are two window products in our range that we would class as heritage windows and the first of them is the flush sash window, which has openers that sit perfectly flat against the window frame when closed.

Cottage windows would also be regarded as ‘heritage’ and include Georgian bars, with this detailing giving them their ‘cottagey’ aesthetic.

Normally set inside a sealed glass window unit, Georgian bars create a grid pattern on the design (vertically or horizontally), making it look as though a cottage window is divided into small glass panes.

An ever popular choice

Sales of heritage windows have hugely grown in the last couple of years, as you will observe yourself if you take a look around your neighbourhood, where you’re likely to see plenty of heritage window applications.

And it won’t just be in cottages and listed buildings that heritage windows have been chosen for.

Many contemporary residences are now fitted with convincing versions of flush sash windows and cottage windows too to give them classic appeal.
